"The digital age has created the need for a new kind of literacy-a literacy that empowers news consumers to determine whether information is credible, reliable and truthful. This is not just a skill; it is a new core competency for the 21st century. So-called "fake news" is hard to spot and spreads easily, leading to disagreements over basic facts. The antidote to the growing challenges posed by this digital revolution is news literacy. This mini news literacy course includes two three-hour sessions that will teach anyone to become a more critical consumer of news. "

OER Immersive Video Use and Production in COM1010
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

0.0 stars

This unit is designed for a Public Speaking course and uses immersive technologies, found as OERs, which bring attention to the needs of Baruch students’ communities. By participating in this unit, students will spend time exploring OERs, and then receive training in video capture and editing tools including 360 cameras and Adobe Premier Pro to produce their own OERs which will be viewed by future classes. They will be partnered with the Baruch Maker Hub to explore how these tools have been used to produce public advocacy campaigns, and then in the classroom they will story board, rehearse and edit their own campaigns. They will then return to the Maker Hub for filming, editing, and viewing their productions. This unit aims to enhance student experiential learning by focusing on doing good in the world, as well as envisioning new career paths. Through engagements, such as this unit, taken early in the undergraduate curriculum, students will know what tools and trainings are available to them. They will gain rudimentary competence in those skills, and may work to overcome the economic divides at Baruch in which students enter college with radically different access to, skill with, and ability to produce using immersive technologies.

Open Access Discussion Session - Psychology Graduate Course
Unrestricted Use

Rating

This OER Package includes a description, lesson plan, and materials for a discussion session addressing: Why are open research practices, open access, and author rights important to Psychology graduate students? How might tools and resources related to these impact choices graduate students may make in research design, research practice and documentation, and venues for sharing research results?

This session included a pre-class reading assignment and an in-class session with discussion and hands-on activities. The topics of focus were: open research practices, open access, and selecting publication venues for sharing research. These topics were discussed in the context of authorship as experienced by students in undergraduate and graduate programs, including course papers, theses and dissertations, conference presentations, and journal article publishing. Discussions were based on three readings completed prior to the in-class session that covered aspects of: open access, peer review, and open research practices. The class also discussed evaluation criteria to use when selecting a publication venue.

Open Pedagogy in Practice: A Support Primer for Librarians
Unrestricted Use

This resource is intended to provide practitioners with introductory, practical content that they can learn from and adapt to better support their own campus Open Education efforts, particularly Open Pedagogy. It is not intended to be an extensive or exhaustive resource about the educational theories and frameworks out of which Open Pedagogy has emerged, as there are several other wonderful resources that cover that information. It includes a podcast series of teaching faculty interviews that will be helpful for other faculty seeking to learn more about their peers’ experiences with open pedagogy, and librarians will benefit from hearing firsthand perspectives so they can better understand the necessary support. Also included are one-shot lesson plans intended to assist academic librarians tasked with supporting faculty embarking on open pedagogy projects, however, we recognize that it often takes a village, and individuals in other roles will also benefit from these (adaptable) lesson plans.

This Student Lab Manual outlines, in a step-by-step fashion, the complete process of your team research project. You will be given class time each week to meet as a team and to work on each stage of your research project. Each lab builds on the work completed in the prior lab. For example, it is necessary to complete Lab 1 before moving on to Lab 2. The due date for each team lab is indicated in the course outline. After submitting a lab (one per team, unless otherwise marked as an Individual Assignment), you will receive feedback on Canvas from one of the course co-instructors. Your team should use this feedback when completing the next lab. In other words, use the feedback from Lab 1 when completing Lab 2. Your co-instructor will help you throughout the term on your project. They are there to guide you and are happy to do so!
