VIVA Open! Advancing Open Educational Practice Workshop Series

Overview

The VIVA Open! Advancing Open Educational Practices Workshop Series is designed to support Virginia higher education professionals interested in open education initiatives. The workshop series will successively explore topics in open education that advance the development of practices such as collaboration, curation, authoring, and more. 

  • Session 1: Introduction to VIVA & Open Educational Practices 

  • Session 2: Engagement with OER Tools for Discovery, Evaluation, Curation & Collaboration

  • Session 3: Deep Dive into Design, Authoring & Remixing 

  • Session 4: Including Students as Course Creators & Contributors 

Introduction to VIVA & Open Educational Practices

In this session we explore the what, why, and how of OER, highlighting use cases involving successful adoption and implementation of OER.

Session Goals:

  • Connect and get to know each other.

  • Discuss OER goals, supports, outcomes, and expectations.

  • Explore exemplar resources and use cases from institutions of higher education.

  • Discover how to utilize OER tools to find, contribute, collaborate, and share.

Engagement with OER Tools for Discovery, Evaluation, Curation & Collaboration

In this session we discover effective search, quality evaluation, and curation strategies to collaboratively identify, evaluate, and organize OER relevant to desired use.

Session Goals:

  • Connect and learn from each other

  • Discuss best practices for OER Discovery, Evaluation, and Curation

  • Discover how to evaluate and organize OER

    • Evaluate resources in the comment section

    • Create group folders and subfolders

    • Save resources to group folders

Evaluation Tools:

Engagement, Practice, Reflection & Advocacy Activities:

  • Engagement - Create your own evaluation criteria

  • Practice - Evaluate a resource with your evaluation criteria by adding a comment. Save the resource to a folder or subfolder in our Group

  • Reflection - Share your evaluation criteria in the Group discussion

  • Advocacy - Share something you learned today with someone in your community

Session 2: Engagement with OER Tools for Discovery, Evaluation, Curation & Collaboration

 

OER Design, Authoring & Remixing

In this session we explore collaborative workflows to utilize authoring tools to design, create and remix resources; and leverage supports for peer review, reflection, and refinement of resources.

Session Goals:

  • Connect and learn from each other.

  • Explore OER authoring exemplars from Universities and Colleges in Virginia and beyond

  • Discover how to author and remix using the Authoring tool

  • Plan next steps for future OER work

Engagement, Practice, Reflection & Advocacy Activities:

  • Engagement - Identify a resource you created or want to remix to design and publish

  • Practice - Design and publish a resource in our Group and save it to the drafts and published resources folder

  • Reflection - Provide feedback in the comment section on a draft or published resource in our group using your evaluation criteria from Session 2 

  • Advocacy - Share something you learned today with someone in your community

In this session we explore and identify opportunities to engage students as creators of OER and show how their contributions to demonstrate their learning can transform their experiences in their courses, communities, and beyond.

Session Goals:

  • Introduce Open Pedagogy - the practice of engaging students as course creators and contributors

  • Explore best practices for Open Pedagogy - showcasing examples worldwide and in Virginia and Pennsylvania

  • Make connections between Open Pedagogy and Project Based Learning design elements

  • Discuss ideas and next steps for bringing Open Pedagogy into your work

Engagement, Practice, Reflection & Advocacy Activities:

  • Engagement - Explore Open Pedagogy Resources, complete the survey and share feedback

  • Practice - Add Open Pedagogy to the resource you published last week

  • Reflection - Share your ideas and other opportunities for advancing Open Pedagogy and/or OER in your work in our Group Discussion

  • Advocacy - Share something you learned today with someone in your community
