Special Education Endorsement Pathway Case Studies
Students in the special education teacher preparation program at the University of Mary Washington take a series of classes to develop knowledge of the characteristics of students with disabilities, and legal and instructional requirements for meeting the needs of these learners in Virginia’s public schools. While case studies have demonstrated effectiveness in teacher preparation, there is no single resource that facilitates case-based instruction across multiple special education courses. Multiple texts, costing approximately $190 over the duration of the preparation program, are required. Additionally, none of the available texts present special education case studies in the context of Virginia regulations or policies. This project proposes to develop a case study book that will be offered as an Open Educational Resource. The book will specifically translate special education requirements to Virginia regulations and provide case studies for the entire special education teacher preparation program.
