This course explores the world’s visual arts, focusing on the development of visual awareness, assessment, and appreciation by examining a variety of styles from various periods and cultures while emphasizing the development of a common visual language. The materials are meant to foster a broader understanding of the role of visual art in human culture and experience from the prehistoric through the contemporary. This is an Open Educational Resource (OER), an openly licensed educational material designed to replace a traditional textbook.

This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts. It includes a brief study of art history and in depth studies of the elements, media, and methods used in creative processes and thought. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: interpret examples of visual art using a five-step critical process that includes description, analysis, context, meaning, and judgment; identify and describe the elements and principles of art; use analytical skills to connect formal attributes of art with their meaning and expression; explain the role and effect of the visual arts in societies, history, and other world cultures; articulate the political, social, cultural, and aesthetic themes and issues that artists examine in their work; identify the processes and materials involved in art and architectural production; utilize information to locate, evaluate, and communicate information about visual art in its various forms. This course is an exploration of visual art forms and their cultural connections for the student with little experience in the visual arts. It is the only resource I have found that approximates techniques, media, and an overview of different processes that is usually the first half of a printed text on art appreciation or an introduction to art. This is geared toward an undergraduate, lower-level student population. The art history survey is inadequate, but combined with another source, like Boundless' art history, this can be a complete text for an Art 100 course.

Known for its durability, a fresco painting is created in "sections" on freshly laid wet plaster, allowing the painter to comprehensively portray the subject and execute designs with ease. As both the paint and plaster dry, they become completely fused. Highly popular during the late-thirteenth to the mid-sixteenth centuries, fresco painting was almost a lost art by the time this book was first published in 1846. This volume, by a recognized authority in the field, was highly influential in reintroducing fresco painting to public attention. In addition to translating descriptions of painting methods used by such masters as Alberti, Cennini, Vasari, Borghini, Pozzo, and Pacheco, the author also interprets passages from rare manuscripts on the causes of fresco destruction and how to retouch, repair, and clean these works of art. The Syllabus for Bio. 013, Writing in the Sciences - Evolutionary Themes, is a College Writing 2 course that develops student skill in science writing for different audiences: Scientists writing for themselves (the Field journal); Scientists writing for other scientists (the Review article); and Scientists writing for students/ society ( an Essay for a periodical that utilizes analogy/metaphor). To inform this writing, students read and discuss Darwin's original works and the writings of more contemporary evolutionary theorists, including E. Mayr and S.J. Gould. This course is appropriate for incoming students as well as more advanced biology students.

This zine is a collection of biographies and portraits of badass womxn in the Pacific Northwest. Undergraduate students collaborated to create this resource that fuses multilingual poetry, art, and writing to celebrate and honor some of the strongest people you might not have heard of. It was created in an interdisciplinary gender, women & sexuality studies classroom led by Professor Julie Shayne, librarians Penelope Wood and Denise Hattwig, and peer facilitator Nicole Carter.

Basic Hindi is an online, interactive, theme-based textbook for the true beginner of Hindi language. It promotes communicative, linguistic, and cultural competence. It has mixture of pedagogical approaches to fit all types of learning and teaching philosophies/styles to achieve intermediate low to mid ACTFL proficiency level within a semester.

This online interactive theme-based open textbook is for beginner learners of the Khmer language. This book aims to provide a practical introduction to speaking, listening, and reading. By the end of this course, students will be at the B1 level of the Common Framework for Language and at the low intermediate level on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency scales. Basic Khmer is funded by the Open Educational Resources Program at Michigan State University.

Basic Urdu is a theme-based, interactive open-source online textbook for the true novice learners of the Urdu language. The book uses mixed pedagogical approaches to language teaching to match diverse teaching and learning styles. It aims to help learners achieve intermediate low to mid-proficiency levels set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

The University of North Georgia Press and Affordable Learning Georgia bring you Becoming America: An Exploration of American Literature from Precolonial to Post-Revolution. Featuring sixty-nine authors and full texts of their works, the selections in this open anthology represent the diverse voices in early American literature. This completely-open anthology will connect students to the conversation of literature that is embedded in American history and has helped shaped its culture.

The Historia Ecclēsiastica Gentis Anglōrum, completed in 731 CE, remains our best source of knowledge about early Anglo-Saxon history. The author, popularly known as The Venerable Bede (ca. 672–735), was born on the lands of the monastery of Wearmouth and Jarrow, in the Kingdom of Northumbria. He entered the monastery at the age of seven, and made it his home for the rest of his life. He was the author of nearly fifty works, written in Latin, including grammatical and metrical textbooks, Biblical exegesis, and church history.

As he explains in the first book of his Historia, five languages were spoken in Britain in his day: Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Brittonic (Welsh), Irish, Pictish, and Latin. While the vernaculars were spoken languages used in everyday speech, Latin was generally a scholarly language, learned from textbooks, as we tend to learn it today, and reserved for use by the Church. The Latin that Bede learned at Wearmouth and Jarrow, and that he wrote in his many books, is remarkably close to what we think of as Classical Latin, with some usages more common to later Latin. More will be said about Bede’s Latin in the section on Bede’s Latin.

Currently, the only available student commentary on selections from Bede’s Historia Ecclēsiastica is F.W. Garforth’s 1967 text and commentary (Bolchazy-Carducci), which has several shortcomings—not least of which is his complete omission of sections on important Anglo-Saxon women such as Saints Æthelthryth and Hild. This commentary seeks to address those omissions, as well as to provide fuller and more helpful grammatical notes and up-to-date digital resources (such as maps) to aid in an understanding of Bede’s text.
