This book is intended for use in a large introductory class in new media in a program that covers the “full-stack” including critical/cultural studies, media management, diffusion of innovation, and synthetic media production. The first half of this basic sequence covered new media and democracy, finance, intellectual property law, basic games, and transmedia. The second half of the sequence covers many topics related to aesthetics, design, technology, and methodology.

To that end, this book needed to be written so that it would be helpful for many different professors and trajectories of study. This book is in neither engineering, social science, nor the humanities, but also all of those. At the same time, this is a program in the Communication Studies and Media Studies traditions of the United States and that texture will come across.

This unit is designed for a Public Speaking course and uses immersive technologies, found as OERs, which bring attention to the needs of Baruch students’ communities. By participating in this unit, students will spend time exploring OERs, and then receive training in video capture and editing tools including 360 cameras and Adobe Premier Pro to produce their own OERs which will be viewed by future classes. They will be partnered with the Baruch Maker Hub to explore how these tools have been used to produce public advocacy campaigns, and then in the classroom they will story board, rehearse and edit their own campaigns. They will then return to the Maker Hub for filming, editing, and viewing their productions. This unit aims to enhance student experiential learning by focusing on doing good in the world, as well as envisioning new career paths. Through engagements, such as this unit, taken early in the undergraduate curriculum, students will know what tools and trainings are available to them. They will gain rudimentary competence in those skills, and may work to overcome the economic divides at Baruch in which students enter college with radically different access to, skill with, and ability to produce using immersive technologies.

The idea for this compilation began with students in two ways. First, students asked why, in the Internet age, do we have a book? The answer to the question is complex, but the short answer is that not all information is equal. What this book contains is authoritative information, thanks to the Internet age and to open education resources. Second, I noticed some students didn’t buy the required, commercial textbook, and I could tell that they didn’t get enough from class discussions alone. This document is my attempt to provide that information in an affordable way. This book’s appearance may seem a bit messy, but the information is well-researched, drawn from a wide variety of perspectives on communication and written by communication scholars. I believe this course will make a difference in your life as a community member, as a family member, in your career, and in your relationships. Having the information in this book will help you effectively learn the communication skills and concepts you need.

Why is writing important in science? It’s not enough to simply have an idea, or discover something. Credit for the finding will go to the person who first published the work. This is what motivated Darwin; more than 20 years after his data collection voyage he received a letter from another naturalist, Alfred Wallace, who had made similar discoveries and was developing a theory of natural selection. Darwin went into a writing frenzy and finished a quarter of a million words within one year. Scientific writing is different than creative writing, although both can be improved by storytelling. Writing for science requires clarity since the goal is to explain new discoveries or concepts.

Reading Mediations is an interactive, web-based guide for teaching and learning critical online reading skills. Best used with high school or college students, it includes a selection of critical reading tools and verification resources, guided readings, and structured learning activities. It also presents opportunities for independent exploration and critique of the online news and information ecosystem, with live content provided through Twitter and several news websites.
The guiding principle of Reading Mediations is that the epidemic of misinformation, propaganda, and poor journalism online cannot be eradicated by fact-checking tools alone. It must begin with us, the readers. Learning first about how we consume information, and then learning how to do so in a savvy, responsible, and self-aware manner, readers will be better equipped to absorb and share what they engage with online as critical thinkers.
