This resource is a modification of the Washington Models for the Evaluation of Bias Content in Instructional Materials (2009) that is made available through OER Commons under a public domain license. This resource attempts to both update the content with more contemporary vocabulary and also to narrow the scope to evaluating still images as they are found online. It was developed as a secondary project while working on a BranchED OER grant during summer 2020. It includes an attached rubric adapted from the Washington Model (2009).

The Ball is in Y(Our) Court: Social Change Through and Beyond Sport
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

This book was created by upper-year kinesiology students in a Fall 2020 seminar class entitled “Sport and Culture” at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. This term was a very different learning experience for all of us, as we had to do our courses online due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic threw a lot of challenges our way, but we adapted as needed, and we think our class was still very successful. KNPE 473 focused on looking at big social issues through a sport lens and then funneling out beyond sport to look at these issues from a broader sociological perspective. As a class, the 25 students, our Teaching Assistant, Niya St. Amant, and our professor, Dr. Mary Louise Adams, worked together to create learning objectives, grading contracts, and this book.

Best Practices in Accessible Online Design
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

Rating

Accessibility is frequently the last thing course and website developers want to think about when creating an online content. There is extra time involved up front, but it can help prevent problems down the line. I think most of us in higher education care about all students and want to help them to our best ability. There are also laws protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities to have access to programs and services that institutions of higher education offer. Section 504 of The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 says that public institutions receiving federal funds, this includes student financial aid, need to ensure that people with disabilities can participate in programs & activities and have the same benefits that people without disabilities have. It requires academic adjustments and accommodation to ensure full participation. Section 508 is an amendment that requires electronic information and technology, such as websites and online courses be accessible. The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 expands the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to private as well as public institutions of higher education. The newest is The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010. It requires modern communications to be accessible to people with disabilities. This includes VOIP services, electronic messaging, video conferencing, video communications and mobile browsers.

Bimodal Flexible (ByFlex) Course Design
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Higher education institutions are realizing that students want and need flexible options for attending and participating in courses. During the COVID pandemic, the world saw that many jobs could be done online. We also saw how many college and university courses and programs could be completed online and still produce quality graduates. This set a precedent for employees to expect more flexible options upon their return to the workplace. It also set a precedent for students to request more flexible options upon their return to campuses. Educational institutions can reach more students by offering flexible learning options and therefore, increase revenue and maintain growth, so it is an attractive option. Students prefer flexible course design because it allows them to customize a work-school-life balance that will aid them to meeting their personal, work, and academic goals. This book asks questions about whether or not trimodal flexible (HyFlex) courses are worth their costs and challenges and suggests that a bimodal flexible (ByFlex) course design, with fewer challenges, will still meet the students' needs for flexibility and, therefore, may be a better choice. Flexible learning is happening and is probably here to stay!

This book,"Blended Learning in K-12", is an overview of the concept of "blended learning" and how it relates to the integration of technologies in the K-12 environment. Dr. N.I. Scagnoli, the course instructor, has guided the students of the CTER 7 cohort in the creation of this book. This could not have happened in the 1980s. (By way of explanation to non-Americans, K-12 means all primary and secondary schooling).
