This book uses authentic freshman-level reading materials to teach important reading skills and prepare students, including English Language Learners, for university. In each chapter, you’ll find passages from freshman textbooks, explicit reading skill instruction, reading comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, and discussion topics. Together the materials in this book will help students better understand typical readings from their freshman year of college by giving them the tools to succeed.

The practice of adding either OER or no-cost/low-cost materials designators in course catalogs is on the rise, aiming to give more visibility and transparency to students and administrators as to which courses offer these more affordable options. Few formal reports have been published on the implementation and impact of OER/No Cost/Low Cost designations integrated into course schedules at colleges and universities. This booklet aims to lessen the literature gap by providing written accounts of the course marking drivers, implementation strategies, challenges, and lessons learned presented by panelists at the 16th Annual Open Education Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, in October 2019.

The authors propose that a professional learning community is a novel and meaningful perspective from which to approach program review, particularly when the community is embedded within a reliable infrastructure such as a course.

The Program Review Course described in this Handbook follows an interdisciplinary cohort- and team-based model that is faculty-led. The course offers a reliable institutional framework for learning through formalized structures and nested support services. The course is housed in the office of quality assurance and coordinated and maintained by a quality assurance practitioner. All aspects of the course are available through a learning management system, such as Moodle. Program review teams are automatically enrolled in the course where they have access to timelines, templates, a discussion forum, and a program review handbook. During the 14-month course, faculty engage in a comprehensive review of their program and/or department. The course includes eight modules: 1) orientation, 2) curriculum mapping, 3) SOAR analysis activity, 4) surveys, 5) self-study report, 6) external review, 7) action planning, and 8) reporting results to the university community.

This team-based course is designed to evaluate program performance in relation to student success, curriculum content, program viability and impact, and the program’s contribution to the university’s mission and vision. Program performance is measured through a combination of self- and external peer- evaluation. Through evidence-based inquiry and analyses, findings are documented in a comprehensive report leading to an action plan and goals for program improvement over the next five to seven years.

The journey to Indigenize curriculum fosters self-development. Whether you are an Indigenous or non-Indigenous person, through this journey you will gain insight into your own culture and background, privileges, or oppressions that have affected your life, and you will identify biases or gaps in your knowledge. You will question the pervasive dominance of Western epistemologies, pedagogies, and resources within curriculum, and make space for including Indigenous ways of being that can benefit all learners. You will engage in the emotional work of confronting the trauma of colonization and building stronger relationships with Indigenous people and communities, and actively participate in the hands-on work of revising your curriculum and pedagogical approaches. And finally, you will reflect upon your own agency in regards to Indigenization, and take action toward systemic change in your institution.

Many Indigenous students are first-generation learners at post-secondary institutions, and their interactions with front-line staff and service providers inform how they share their experience with their family and community. One negative experience can cause harm and mistrust. Positive experiences help Indigenous students feel respected and help to build their trust with staff and faculty. This can lead to future generations wanting to further their post-secondary education. This guide is an opportunity for you to better understand Indigenous students and to figure out ways both you and your area or department can work to ensure supportive student experiences. The Manitoba Foundations Guide (Brandon Edition) is the first Manitoba adaptation of an open professional learning series developed for staff across post-secondary institutions. This guide is an adaptation of the Foundations Guide published by BCcampus and the Ministry of Advanced Education in collaboration with a steering committee of Indigenous education leaders from post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. This guide is intended to support the systemic change occurring across post-secondary institutions and beyond through Indigenization, decolonization, and reconciliation. A guiding principle from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada process states why this change is happening.

In discussing the case study in which this approach is tested, the author develops her argument for embracing various critical perspectives through the personal engagement of students. From the start the author acknowledges her own engaged position as a language teacher in a liberal humanistic educational environment. She adopts a self -critical perspective through which her engagement with adverse student reaction leads to deepening insights both for the author and her students as part of the non-linear process of learning.
