Student Handbook for the Arabic Language

After completing my Arabic minor, I wanted to continue my studies but encountered few resources to do so independently. Given my six years of Arabic experience, I decided to write a free, online, Intermediate Arabic textbook through my Open Educational Resources internship. I chose to write a textbook because I saw the value in Arabic materials from the perspective of a student, as I can relate to the struggles of learning Arabic. As so, I structured my project to act as a digital pocket guide for students to use when studying or traveling abroad. The textbook currently contains five units broken down into sections of vocabulary, grammar, cultural dialogues written by Arab students on campus, study abroad advice, and practice activities.

Teaching Visual Effects for Audiovisual Production using Digital Learning Objects

The research project of this Ph.D. in Digital Media has as objective the creation of a tool (object of learning) for pedagogical aid in teaching the production of visual effects in audiovisual productions, more specifically in the interactions between real and virtual images (match moving).

The prototype created during the research has the purpose of assisting teachers and students in the practical exercises of interaction between real and virtual images.

The tool has the ability to assist in data collection at the time of live-action filming, given the large amount and complexity of these data, and its vital need for the reproduction of real conditions in the virtual universe later.

In addition, it has the ability to generate a script (in Maxscript language) for its use in 3DS Max graphics software, automating part of the production process.

It is also part of the research, besides the conception and creation of the tool (learning object), its validation in the pedagogical and design bias (user experience and user interface).

Urinalysis Atlas: A Pictorial Guide to Formed Elements in Urine

In Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Urinalysis course, students learn to evaluate normal and abnormal formed urinary elements through microscopic examination of urine sediment.They learn to interpret results and correlate with other laboratory data to identify disease. Access to quality atlases are a vital tool in the students’ learning process. Because the cost of printing pictures is so great, the price of printed atlases is high. The number of images included is limited. And many excellent atlases are now out of print.

This project seeks to eliminate those challenges for students by giving access to an Open Educational Resource (OER) atlas for urinalysis. This format is easily accessed during students’ time on campus and will continue into their careers as medical laboratory scientists. There are currently not many medical subject resources available as open resources. It is our hope that other healthcare professionals will find these resources beneficial. This project is unique in that students are the main contributors of the pictures used. While not entirely comprehensive at this point, the OER platform will allow for continual updating as new images and information become available.

Virginia Cooperative Extension Gardener Handbook is a guide for all gardeners in Virginia. It covers a variety of topics important for beginning and experienced gardeners, including soil health, native plants, and integrated pest management. This manual provides an understanding of the basics of gardening in Virginia and helps to build a strong foundation of gardening knowledge. Resources for additional reading can be found at the end of each chapter. We encourage readers to take a deeper dive into the topics that interest them and continue their learning journey.
